[He keeps right on walking. The woman at the reception tries to call out again, but she's apparently not that bothered. Not enough to leave her post and come after them. Jon is out and walking briskly along the pavement with Ava within a few seconds. He lets out a breath.]

Right. I can take that Statement back to the Archives. Christ, what a mess.

[Jon realizes something.] Ah- My charm. They took it. I had a green one. [He glances back toward the hospital.] Well, they can keep it, I suppose.

[ She pulls the Statement out from under her arm and looks like she's going to give it back...and then she swipes it away at the last moment, giving him a long look of frustration. ]

What the fuck happened to you? How did you break your arms?

[compellingstatement]

[He gives her a look right back.]

Are you holding my Statement ransom for an answer?

Maybe. Are you going to avoid my question?

[ She shakes the folder in emphasis. ]

[compellingstatement]

[Well, he was going to, but if she's going to be like that...]

There was a misunderstanding with someone who has magic powers.

Seems to happen to you a lot, doesn't it. I'm pretty sure that's the exact same line I hear almost every week.

[ She lowers the folder for him to take but as he does so, she reaches out and loops her one arm around his shoulder companionably. Suspiciously so. Oh, right, because she's still berating him. ]

Which one this time? Nick?

[Oh, he's not sure if he likes this sort of companionable from her. It seems more like she's holding him to keep him from running away than to be comforting. But Jon takes the folder and clutches it close so she can't take it away again.]

It wasn't a witch. It... it was someone new. Someone I, er... was warned about by Vash. I didn't want to go over to him. I just... it felt like I needed to go and sit next to him on the park bench. He can control people.

[ Mmmm too bad, this is your consequence. Maybe think twice about calling her next time? ]

I'm sorry, let me try to understand this: you knew of a man who could control people and you felt like you needed to go sit next to him and possibly provoke him. And you assumed that wouldn't come back to bite you?

I'm saying, I think he made me go and sit with him, Ava. I tried to pretend I didn't know him, but it just got... awkward. And then I sort of... compelled him. He turned it into a Statement, himself. I was just asking a question.

You sort of compelled him. With a question. Like you usually do.

[ Jon, please. ]

But he...compelled you in turn to come sit with him. Was he aware of who you were and what you could do?

[Jon shakes his head.]

I don't think so. I think the people with the blue charms are keen on messing about with the ones with green. He might have seen mine and just decided to do something with that.

Oh, it's that shit. I've noticed that too.

[ Which doesn't make it any easier, she guesses. Ugh, what a mess. ]

So he knows now. About the whole...Statement thing. What did he tell you? What was he willing to give up?

[There's a long pause.]

Why he hates humans. I don't... it was bad, Ava. Suffice it to say he has good reason to hate most people.

[bloodbinds]

[ If there was still mirth lingering, it's gone. Ava gives Jon a critical glance over, her frown returning in full force. ]

...Is he going to be a problem here, Jon?

[compellingstatement]

I don't know. Vash is terrified of him. I might have scared him enough he won't bother me.

[He can hope he scared the man enough.]
